Pump up the Volume staring Christian Slater as a pirate radio dj in some early 90's desolate Arizona suburb was for me, a great inspiration. The music was all wild and the naked chick gave me a boner. What was released as the soundtrack was an abysmal piece of doo-doo that left off all of the most crucial musical nuggets, with the exception of the Henry Rollins and Bad Brains cover of "Kick out the Jams". For years I wondered who had written the awesome song about going to jail. I guess i could have just watched the ending credits and the mystery would have been solved, but i never did. Sometimes the mystery is more fun. It wasn't until I decided that I needed to watch some old episodes of MTV's Liquid Television that i discovered the frighteningly odd truth. The song was by WAS (NOT WAS), those dudes who wrote that song about opening the door and getting on the floor and then everybody walking the dinosaur.
 Go figure.

Noisy, plodding, brutal and BROWN, Debut 45 by Philadelphia's Watery Love is one hell of a relentless head pounder. It's aggro, it's basic, and it's perfect. Released on my favorite current label Richie Records in an edition of 330 a couple of years ago, it has become the focus of my hunts through the dusty bins of my favorite Philly record shops.

Half Japanese- The Band That Would Be King (1989)

half japanese's the band that would be king, one of my all time favorite albums, was given to me on an old cassette by my tenth grade history teacher. well, actually i borrowed it and never gave it back. i would never hear music the same way again. from the first press of the play button on my shitty twenty dollar walkman i was hooked. i never realized that rock or punk or "alternative" music this weird and wonderful existed. how in the hell was it possible that this band existed and who would possibly put out a record by them? that tape got played to the point of utter disintegration. it actually took me some time to rundown a link in present day. this link seems to have some extra track's not on the original. i am so stoaked to have this in digital form so i can have it and so that i can share it with you now.

Nine Shocks Terror- Paying Ohmage (2001)

This record is definitely on the top of the list of my favorite records of the worldwide Y2K hardcore and thrash explosion. Of all the lp's and 7"s i collected during this period, and there was a shit ton, this burly slab is the one I come back to over and over. This Cleveland band, infamous for the buck wild live shows, brought serious thunder on this album bursting with drunken haymaker to the face hardcore thrash. This shit is angry, very, very angry. The vocals are fucking insane and the music is brutal and reckless with enough hooks to keep it interesting. Even if you aren't really that into hardcore, i'm telling you, throw this on when you just can't fucking take it anymore and somethings got to give. i shit you not.

Roky Erickson and the Aliens - The Evil One (1980)

Get ready to be taken on another one. This album quickly became the most spun in my collection for months after i heard it. Roky Erickson is by far the most talented and tuneful outsider artist of all time! In the tradition of Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Boris Pickett, Roky wrote campy horror/sci-fi B-movie subject matter set to bouncy poppy guitar rocking greatness. Its all here, LUCIFER, demons, two headed dogs, zombies, bloody hammers, and even creatures with atom brains!! This man wrote the greatest odes to Lucifer ever put to tape! Sure the sound has a lot of 80's polish on it and sounds like some kind of rockin' texas boogie-woogie at times, which does turn some off, but just try to listen to this and not become obsessed with these songs. There is many Roky albums with many different bands, but this is the one! This album is undeniable! This is for fans of shit that doesn't suck.

philly's GREATEST riff merchants bring the fucking thunder on this, their debut lp, which is sold as a soundtrack for a lost satanist biker b-movie. the liner notes and "story" of this album are worth the price of admission alone, and then you get to the tunes!!! the stoner vibe scene is full of mediocrity and yawn inducing blandness, but not serpent throne. they actually take the time to put down the bong, take a big step off of Sleeps nuts and craft amazingly heavy instrumental hard guitar rock CLASSICS!!! duel leads galore, no corny ass ozzy wanna be ("a singer would just get in the way of the riffs!!"), thunderous rhythm section, and the heady heady riffs that just never seem to stop. buy this album and their second "the battle of old crow", and stay tuned for a new album they tell me is coming soon. if you ever get a chance to see Serpent Throne, don't be a dumb ass, do what you got to do to get there, they will slay your shit. my favorite current live band, HANDS DOWN!!
